    How this calculator works

Calories are estimated as MET × body weight (kg) × hours, using MET values for swimming, cycling, and running from the Compendium of Physical Activities. Carbohydrate to replace assumes roughly half of endurance energy comes from carbohydrate at 4 kcal per gram.

    Assumptions

    • • Steady effort at the selected intensity
    • • Standard MET values for each discipline

    Limitations

    • • MET estimates ignore individual efficiency and terrain
    • • Hot conditions and wind change real expenditure

    Who this is for

    • • Triathletes estimating training and race energy cost
    • • Athletes planning fuelling and recovery nutrition

    Who this is not for

    • • Precise clinical or weight-loss calorie prescription
    • • Replacing lab-measured metabolic testing
