    Swim Goggles: Buyer's Guide

Pool vs. open water, tints, anti-fog — and why you should own at least two pairs

Cheap goggles are one of the best value items in triathlon. But the wrong pair at race day — leaking, fogging, or blinding glare — can ruin your swim. Here's how to pick.

    Choosing the Right Lens Tint

    • Clear: Pool training and dawn/dusk swims.
    • Smoke / grey: Overcast days. General-purpose open water.
    • Mirrored silver / blue: Bright sun, outdoor pool, race day.
    • Polarized: Reduces glare off the water. Expensive but noticeable.
    • Amber / rose: Low-light, fog, overcast — boosts contrast.

Race-day tip: bring two pairs in different tints. Weather can change overnight.

    Budget Tiers

    $15–25 — training workhorse

Speedo Vanquisher, Arena Cobra, TYR Blackhawk. Durable, comfortable for laps.

    $30–50 — race-ready open water

Roka R1, Aqua Sphere Kayenne, Zoggs Predator. Wide FOV, good seal, mirrored options.

    $60–100 — premium

Roka X1, Magic5 custom-fit, Form smart goggles. Niche advantages — custom fit, HUD displays. Not necessary for most.

    Fit & Leak-Testing

    • • Press goggles to your face without the strap. They should suction-stick briefly. If they fall instantly, the gasket shape is wrong for you.
    • • The strap sets position, not seal. Don't crank it tight to compensate for a bad gasket.
    • • Adjust nose bridge width if the goggles have swappable bridges.
    • • Break in new goggles in the pool before racing — confirm no leaks, no fog.

    Anti-Fog & Care

    • Never wipe the inside of the lens. You'll destroy the factory anti-fog coating.
    • • Rinse in cool fresh water after every swim — chlorine degrades gaskets.
    • • Store in a case, away from heat.
    • • Anti-fog coating fades after ~6 months. Reapply anti-fog spray or baby shampoo as needed.
    • • Replace goggles every 6–12 months of heavy use.
