Rolling Start and Your Individual Cutoffs

Ironman Wales uses a rolling self-seeded start. Athletes enter the water in waves over approximately 20 minutes, typically running from around 07:25 to 07:45. Your cutoffs are measured from when you personally cross the timing mat, not from when the first athlete started.

If you start at 07:40 instead of 07:25, your bike cutoff clock time becomes 18:10 (not 17:55) and your overall cutoff is 00:40 the following morning. The elapsed-time budget is identical regardless of where in the rolling window you start.

Intermediate traffic-plan checkpoints (race clock, not per-athlete): Swim Lap 1 at 09:00, Bike 69.3 mi at 15:20, 82 mi at 16:15, 95 mi at 17:10, Run 19.7 mi at 23:15. These are fixed logistical gates for marshals and traffic management. Athletes who start later in the rolling window have less buffer against these fixed times even though their per-athlete elapsed cutoffs shift accordingly. Confirm the exact application of these gates in your 2026 athlete guide.

    Course Characteristics

    Swim: North Beach, Tenby

Open sea swim in Carmarthen Bay at Tenby North Beach. Water temperature in September typically ranges from 15.5 to 17.5 degrees C. Under IRONMAN wetsuit rules, wetsuits are mandatory at or below 16 degrees C and optional up to 24.5 degrees C. In most recent years Ironman Wales athletes have raced in a wetsuit. The official water temperature is measured at race start; conditions can differ from training-week readings.

    Bike: Pembrokeshire Hills

The 180km bike course winds through Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Expect multiple significant climbs, exposed headland sections, and typically 2,000 to 2,500 metres of elevation gain. Ironman Wales is consistently rated one of the toughest bike courses in European long-distance triathlon. When estimating your bike split, assume 1.5 to 2 km/h slower than your typical flat-road average speed.

    Run: Tenby Town

Multiple laps through the narrow streets of Tenby town centre. The crowd support is exceptional and helps on later laps. The run surface is relatively flat compared to the bike, but leg fatigue accumulated on the hilly bike course tends to inflate run times for most athletes.

    Wetsuit Eligibility at Ironman Wales

Tenby North Beach sea temperature in September averages 16 to 17 degrees C. IRONMAN wetsuit rules (per official competition rulebook):

    • At or below 16 degrees C: Wetsuits mandatory
    • 16.1 to 24.5 degrees C: Wetsuits optional
    • Above 24.5 degrees C (76.1 F): Wetsuits banned

The Tenby sea in September puts you right on the mandatory/optional boundary. Plan to own and train in a wetsuit. The race-morning temperature announcement is the definitive ruling.

    How this calculator works

Cutoff gates were read verbatim from the official 2024 IRONMAN Wales Cut Off Document and are elapsed time from each athlete's individual start chip. The calculator compares your projected swim, bike and run splits, plus transitions, against those gates.

    Assumptions

    • • Cutoff gates are elapsed time from individual start chip time
    • • Standard published race distances for the format
    • • Typical clock times assume a 07:25 individual start

    Limitations

    • • Cutoffs can be revised each season; confirm in the current athlete guide
    • • Intermediate time-of-day checkpoints (race logistics) are not modeled per-athlete

    Who this is for

    • • Athletes registered for Ironman Wales planning their pacing
    • • Athletes comparing their projected splits to the official gates
    • • Coaches building a race-day plan around the actual cutoffs

    Who this is not for

    • • Athletes racing a different event (each race publishes its own cutoffs)
    • • Anyone relying on a fixed race clock rather than individual start time
