Sprint Triathlon Training Plan (8 Weeks, Beginner)
An 8-week sprint triathlon training plan built for beginners who can already swim 300m, cycle 30 km, and run 5 km comfortably. Six sessions a week, two rest days, one brick per week, and a simple taper.
How long does it take to train for a sprint triathlon?
- • 8 weeks if you can already cover the distances slowly in each sport.
- • 12 weeks if you're brand new to one discipline (usually swimming).
- • Plan on 6 sessions per week: 2 swim, 2 bike, 2 run, plus one brick.
- • Total weekly time: 4–6 hours.
- • Finish the plan with a 7–10 day taper.

What you need before starting
- Swim 300m continuously (not necessarily fast).
- Cycle 30 km in under 1h15.
- Run 5 km non-stop.
- Six weeks of clear calendar (work, travel, life).
- A bike that's safe and road-legal — fancy isn't required.
Race-day nutrition and pacing
Sprint triathlon is short enough that fuelling is straightforward: 1 gel mid-bike, electrolyte in the bottle, and finish hard off the bike. Pacing is the hard part — go out at 70% on the swim, ride at 85%, and save the final 10 minutes for the run.
- Use the Race Nutrition Planner (Sprint) for a personalised fuelling plan.
- Use the Race Time Calculator to set a target finish time.
